FOREWORD

SUPERMAN'S FIRST ADVENTURE, in Action Comics ♯1 June 1938, opens in mid-leap, with the story already underway. The narrative, edited to simulate Superman's pace and velocity, drags us into its slipstream and, with a cocky grin of encouragement, leaves us no option but to accelerate to keep up.

From the opening hallucinatory flash of that red cape blurring through the night, via 75 years of regular appearances in an array of comic book titles, radio shows, movies, novels, games, and even musicals, Superman's tireless race to reach the next emergency, save the next life, thwart the next criminal masterplan, has never let up and shows no signs of stopping. That's how it is with Superman; he was created to be unstoppable.

Of all his great powers (over the years Superman has acquired an enviable list, including heat vision, freeze breath, X-ray vision, and more) it may well turn out to be the special talents of longevity and adaptability that count for most. The Man of Tomorrow, born on a distant planet, first and greatest of the super heroes is, ironically, among the most human.
